This is a really simple modification, installation should be well under 10 minutes, even for a novice. First off though, what does it do? This modification will add in a dropdown to your categories display where products are shown (i.e. not where you have subcategories) which will allow the customer to amend the order in which your products are displayed - by price ascending, price descending (cheapest first or highest priced first), or alphabetically starting at A or starting at Z. (like on this site when you are on a category page, try it, see what it does)
Potential issues - the code relies on default settings for your column display (set in admin-> configuration-product listing). You may have to tweak the column numbers to make it work correctly. If you are using a default CRE install, this should be absolutely fine.
